King Abdulaziz International Airport is an aviation facility located 19 km to the north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It was named after King Abdulaziz Al Saud and opened for service after being officially inaugurated in April 1981 AD. King Abdulaziz International Airport is the busiest airport of Saudi Arabia and the third largest airport in the kingdom, it occupies an area of 105 square kilometers. This includes besides the airport proper along with a royal terminal, facilities of the Royal Saudi Air Force and housing facilities for the airport staff.
The airport contains four terminals, the northern, southern, royal and the Hajj terminal, the airport stands for one feature in particular which is the fourth largest terminal in the world after Beijing Capital International Airport, Dubai International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport, the Hajj terminal which occupies five million square feet (465,000 m²). Many airlines from Muslim and non-Muslim countries have used the Hajj Terminal, providing the capacity needed to carry pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. Beside being of the largest terminals in the world, the Hajj terminal is known for its tent-shaped roof, terminal 3's roof is not actually a tent, but a white colored fiberglass. It was designed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). The Hajj Terminal offers pilgrims many facilities, including a mosque, 120 commercial shops, restaurants and coffee shops, a health center and water circuits, and can accommodate up to 80,000 travelers at the same time.
The North Terminal at Jeddah airport is used by all foreign airlines. The South Terminal was reserved for the exclusive use of Saudi Arabian Airlines until 2007 when also the privately owned Saudi carriers Nas Air and Sama Airlines were given permission to use this terminal. Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport airport serves as a major hub for Saudi Arabian Airlines.
